  • Daytona Beach, FL (1888PressRelease) November 14, 2013 - Stephen P. Zappala, who holds a BA in Language and Linguistics from Harvard University, an MS in Language and Linguistics from Georgetown University, and is a certified tutor through Volusia County, first started working in 1960 after earning his master's degree by joining the School of Language Studies of the Foreign Service Institute of the US Department of State. The School, which is the official branch of the State Department, is dedicated to teaching foreign languages to government personnel and their adult dependents scheduled to go overseas.

First a supervisor, then chair of Romance Languages, Mr. Zappala eventually became one of two language chairs in the entire school. As chair, he oversaw management of language departments, supervision of language teachers, writing and overseeing the writing of language materials, language testing, and personal participation in language-related pedagogical discussions.

"Inspired by several teachers and professors, I was also very much intrigued by the prospect of traveling to foreign places and coming in contact with people of different cultures," Mr. Zappala said, who noted how supportive and encouraging his wife was, who is now passed.

Mr. Zappala's hands-on assignments while in the military also helped significantly in his success. He was a corporal in the intelligence branch of the US Marines where he served for two years. During that time, he served as translator-interpreter on a training mission in Latin America. Following his military service, he worked as a secondary school language teacher. Mr. Zappala also credits his academic background and training in languages and linguistics, coupled with having been raised bilingual and having lived in a foreign country where he learned the practical reality of foreign language use.

Since his retirement, Mr. Zappala has authored a language book and a language instruction booklet which he hopes to have published soon and continues to work as a private tutor of both foreign languages and mathematics. He has previously authored and co-authored several language texts, including: Programmed Italian (Vol. I); Italian Familiarization and Short-Term Course; and Brazilian Portuguese Familiarization and Short-Term Course. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including a Meritorious Honor Award with his staff in 1991 for outstanding performance and a Superior Honor Award in 1998 for 38 years of dedicated service with the Foreign Services Institute, School of Language Studies and for exceptional contributions to the Department of State and the people of the. Mr. Zappala is also a current member of the Harvard University Alumni Association.
