Covington Who's Who Selects Richard Dunleavy as an Executive of the Year Member of the Executive and Professional Registry

The selection recognizes Richard Dunleavy's commitment to excellence in Healthcare.
Beginning in Glasgow, Scotland, Richard Dunleavy gained experience in the perioperative field as a registered nurse starting in the orthopedic trauma operating room before progressing into elective orthopedic surgery, and then general and vascular surgery. He also gained experience in the areas of gynecological surgery, oral maxillofacial and ENT surgery. It was in this setting that he learned the responsibilities and skills of being both a good scrub nurse and circulating nurse. It was also in this arena that he moved on to learn the skills and knowledge required to working in the anesthesia side of perioperative nursing, both pre- and post-op.
Nineteen years later, Dunleavy is running the day to day operations of three cardiac operating rooms at Hoag Memorial, including their new hybrid OR. He is responsible for managing both the capital and operations budgets for the department. He also supports the cardiac surgery team, comprising of cardiac surgeons, cardiac anesthesiologists, cardiac OR nurses, and CV techs. He makes sure they are able to provide the highest levels of care, ensuring that the team has everything they need to achieve their goals of providing world-class care.
"I am at present continuing to learn all of the intricate details and skills involved in being the best manager that I think I can be, and which I think my hospital and department deserves," Dunleavy said. "I pride myself on my ability to be flexible, combined with my passion of learning new things, and not being afraid to take a chance. This has lead me here to California and to my current position."
Dunleavy has an Associate's Degree in Nursing as well as a BA in Health Studies. He was fortunate enough to be trained in cardiac nursing once he came to the States and had a great teacher and mentor along the way. He hopes to continue learning and growing his skills and knowledge in both cardiac surgery and perioperative management for years to come, letting his enthusiasm and passion lead the way.
