Covington Who's Who Selects Mark J. Horowitz as a Professional Member of the Executive and Professional Registry

Horowitz, Fourth Grade Teacher at Golda Meir School, has been selected as an Honored Member of the Covington Who's Who Executive and Professional Registry. The selection recognizes Mark J. Horowitz's commitment to excellence in Education.
Horowitz, who holds a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from the University of Rochester and a Master's Degree in Education from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, is a certified teacher of all subjects, began teaching in 1968.
After spending one year as a VISTA volunteer after earning his psychology degree, Horowitz decided to enter the intern program at the educational department at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He took education courses for six weeks, followed by an additional six weeks of student teaching before obtaining a teaching job at Keefe Avenue School in the Milwaukee Public School System.
Teaching fourth grade students, Horowitz covers all subjects. He is also in charge of the schools' annual trip to Denmark which is taken every spring for two weeks. Students are able to discover and develop respect for different cultures, religions, races, and backgrounds, and they have become much more mature, independent, and self-directed. In addition to studying about Denmark, they learn about the Netherlands, where they stop for a day on the way home. They learn about Dutch history and art, including Anne Frank and the Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh.
"While working a full year for VISTA as a volunteer in Milwaukee with children and adults I mostly enjoyed working with the children," Horowitz said. "This is why I decided to become a teacher."
Having been teaching for forty-four years, Horowitz plans to teach for a few more years. He is a current member of the National Education Association, University of Rochester Alumni Association, Milwaukee Kickers Soccer Club, and the Milwaukee Board of School Directors National Honor Roll for Outstanding Teachers. He's the recipient of numerous awards, including a Teacher Recognition Award from Wisconsin Bell/Ameritech in 1992, a Teacher Awards Program Grant through the Greater Milwaukee Education Trust in 1993, a Fellowship Award from Herb Kohl Educational Foundation in 2001, an Excellence in Education Award from the Milwaukee Board of School Directors in 2003, was named Kicker of the Year from the Milwaukee Kickers Soccer Club in 1994, was named Volunteer Administrator of the Year through Wisconsin Youth Soccer Association in 1994, was named Girls Coach of the Year and Boys Coach of the Year through Milwaukee Kickers Soccer Club in 2000 and 2001 respectively, and was also named to their Hall of Fame in 2012.
