  • Flagstaff, AZ (1888PressRelease) October 11, 2012 - Margaret Mayer, Professor at Dine College, has been selected as a Professional Member of the Covington Who's Who Executive and Professional Registry.

Mayer, who holds an MS in Botany from the University of Rhode Island, began working in her field in 1974 as a teacher's assistant of botany at the University of Rhode Island. She also taught at Seattle Central Community College and Bellevue Community College, led field study programs in New Zealand, the Alps, Austria, and the US, and worked as a botanist for the state of Maine and as a ranger naturalist for various national parks before landing a position with Dine College.

Now a natural science instructor who also teaches environmental science, ecology, botany and physical and historical geology, Mayer also developed an introductory course with other tribal colleges on climate change for tribal people. Part of Dine College's mission is to include Navajo philosophy and styles of learning with Western knowledge in each class, resulting in a shared learning experience where Navajo students can help teach the former. Mayer has incorporated field studies in most of her classes as well as labs that can be conducted via television. She serves as curriculum chair and mentors the Green Club and the Animal Care Club.

Born in Pennsylvania Dutch country where most things came from the land, Mayer said, "You grew or made what you needed, which gave a foundation to my life. My desire, even as a little girl, was to help others appreciate nature and all creatures."

Hoping to continue teaching in the environmental field, Mayer would like more focus on sustainability interdisciplinary teaching. She would also like to get more involved in art and writing, and continue traveling and teaching in various parts of the world.

Mayer is a member of the Colorado Ornithological Society, Colorado Native Plant Society, Ecological Society of America, the Sierra Club, and other environmental organizations. She's volunteered and taught in Uganda at Waekere University on climate change and is currently working with Stawa University to develop a conservation center for outreach to local schools. Mayer has also authored and co-authored numerous peer reviewed articles. She has served as a mentor for student interns working in resource management and is a current mentor for the Green Club and Animal Care Club, which helps raise awareness of stray animals on the Navajo Rez. She also helps with spay and neuter clinics and takes strays to no-kill shelters.
