Covington Who's Who Selects M. Jean Groen as a VIP Member of the Executive and Professional Registry
M. Jean Groen, Owner and Author of Wells Groen Publishing, has been selected as a VIP Member of the Covington Who's Who Executive and Professional Registry. The selection recognizes M. Jean Groen's commitment to excellence in Publishing.
- Phoenix-Mesa, AZ (1888PressRelease) April 09, 2014 - M. Jean Groen, who holds a Bachelor's Degree in Home Economics from Northwestern University, began writing in her early teen years by publishing her first article. She also entered an Angel Food Cake in the Orange County Fair, won first prize, and was asked to write an article on making these cakes. Born and raised on a farm near Stilwell, Kansas, Mrs. Groen was eventually uprooted to live in the Santa Ana, California area when her father's health was at jeopardy. She would spend many, many hours in the library and it became a big part of who she is today.
In Mrs. Groen's later years, she and her husband moved to Arizona where she decided she had to have a job if she were to relocate. She served as an activity director and assistant manager for an RV resort, and after teaching a cooking class with a colleague of hers, Don Wells, she was offered the opportunity to co-write a book on food. 'Foods of the Superstitions Old and New' was published in 2003, followed by four more books that she and her partner co-authored together. Mrs. Groen went on to write two books on her own after that, just before Mr. Wells passed away in 2013. She is now working on her eighth book about mesquite.
"I have a work ethic and I am as honest as the day is long. I love people and I like helping them. I love to write, study, and work. I cannot sit around and do nothing," Mrs. Groen said, who is now 80-years-young.
In addition to overseeing her writings, book orderings, mailings, and financial aspects of her publishing company, Mrs. Groen also makes reservations for talks and orders desert products that she resells, like tepary beans and mesquite four. When it comes to her expertise in food, Mrs. Groen previously talked about food from the desert plants at speaking engagements with Mr. Wells and about their utilitarian uses. They always provided food and they began making and selling jellies made from the plants, as well as pickles made from foods of the southwest, like jalapeno bread and butter pickles. She now teaches prickly pear, pomegranate, and mesquite classes for Boyce Thompson Arboretum, is set to co-host her third annual Prickly Pear Festival thanks to her local Chamber of Commerce, and is now on the Chamber's committee and teaches at the festival. Mrs. Groen also leads the Curandero walk at the arboretum once per month, gives presentations at various other locations, and teaches at an annual Prickly Pear and Mesquite Festival at the Superstition Mountain Historical Museum in Apache Junction.
With plans to continue writing, lead walks, and teach classes, Mrs. Groen is enjoying her life in Arizona with her husband. She is a former vice-president of the Human Services section of the American Home Economics Association, and their first children's book, 'The Adventure of Flat Cactus Jack', was named third place in the state in the year it was published.
