  • Asheville, NC (1888PressRelease) January 18, 2013 - Linda Elaine Wheeler, Manager of Samuel's Haven, Inc. Ministries Thrift Shop, has been selected as an Honored Member of the Covington Who's Who Executive and Professional Registry.

Linda Elaine Wheeler, who was previously involved in many volunteer opportunities at the her local county detention center, was offered a position by Chaplain Willie Hendon of Transylvania County Sheriff's Office in February of 2012 to manage a new, non-profit thrift store to help support the many ministry outreaches.

The store, which now helps support the elderly, disabled, underprivileged, the often forgotten law enforcement officers, and the incarcerated, also aids the food pantry which supplies emergency food boxes upon requests up to three times per year and weekly food boxes to the elderly, handicapped, and shut-ins. In charge of opening the store, handling the money, displays, donations, and pricing, helping customers, taking appointments for pick up of donations, receiving of donations brought to the store, Wheeler also tracks volunteer hours and handles other daily tasks as needed.

"Helping others stems from my many childhood experiences helping those in need," Wheeler said. "God has given me a loving and caring heart."

Wheeler, Chaplain Hendon, and his wife are hoping to develop two new areas of ministries in the coming months. Currently, they are able to provide temporary housing for up to six qualified inmates coming out of county detention and hope to expand this to include more housing for inmates as well as on-the-job training through local businesses. Many individuals leaving the center "have a desire to change their life, but when they come out they have no choice but to turn to their old friends and hangouts." Secondly, they have been notified by local nursing home facilities that due to budget cuts in medical assistance funding, some residence will no longer be qualified to continue residing at their facilities. Many of these individuals, if they lose their appeal, will be turned onto the streets. If they don't have families to take them in they will need lodging. Wheeler and the Hendon's are exploring the possibility of helping them with housing through the ministry.

Wheeler has been teaching bible lessons and singing with the residents at Chase Samaritan Nursing Facility for the past three years. She also teaches Children's Church at The Gathering Community Church in Black Mountain. She is finishing her last semester at Haywood Community College in pursuit of an associate's degree in early childhood development. She previously owned and operated her own daycare center for two years.
