  • New York, NY (1888PressRelease) September 12, 2014 - Leonora Chernyakhouskaya, Founder and President of Moscow International School of Translation and Interpreting, has been selected as a VIP Member of the Covington Who's Who Executive and Professional Registry.

Leonora Chernyakhouskaya began teaching ESL in Russia when she was in her second year of college at Moscow Linguistic University. After earning her degree, she was sent to work as an interpreter in Indonesia for a geological survey team. Returning back to Moscow, she began teaching again at her alma mater in translation, which lasted for almost 50 years. Earning her PhD in Comparative Linguistics, she combined training interpreters with work as a researcher under the USSR Academy of Science, at which time she received a second PhD, this time in Cross-Cultural Communications. While serving as a professor, Ms. Chernyakhouskaya also opened her own business in 1989. She started by opening a translation bureau that later grew into a publishing house; the first private one in the USSR. It published Russian authors and translated books and bilingual professional dictionaries.

In 1991, Ms. Chernyakhouskaya opened a language school, Moscow International School of Translation and Interpreting (MISTI), the first non-state educational institution in the USSR, serving as its president. Working mostly as an administrator, she currently hires and instructs teachers, prepares job instructions, supervises all paperwork required by the state, supervising accounting, works on advertising and public relations, examines prospective students, and substitute teaches when necessary.

"I acquired a great deal of experience working as both a translator and an interpreter," Ms. Chernyakhouskaya said about her nearly 50 years of teaching experience at Moscow State Linguistic University. "Being a Jew in Russia and feeling the negative attitude to everything I was doing also helped me develop strong qualities as a fighter. I never allowed myself to stop at any obstacle, small or large, and I always tried hard to overcome them."

Currently, Ms. Chernyakhouskaya is busy creating electronic versions of all of the courses being taught at MISTI alongside her colleagues, so that they can be taught online. It is a difficult process, as all textbooks are planned to have electronic feedback. The interpreting aspect is especially difficult, as there are no stable patterns and it is very difficult to put as many versions of correct answers as possible for the computer to evaluate student answers and react correctly.

Ms. Chernakhouskaya has over 120 written works that have been published in Russia, Germany, Poland and the US. She is currently writing several books, one in her professional area and two historical books based on archives. She is also a current board member of Russian Union of Translators. Ms. Chernakhouskaya currently resides in the US, in Brooklyn, New York.
