    Lawrence E. Brown began teaching in 1995 in the Chicago Public School System as a substitute teacher at their Orr High School. Chosen to work at Spencer Math and Science Academy on the West Side of Chicago, he has since taught third, fourth, fifth, seventh, and eight grade students, and has tutored children in both second and sixth grade.

    Now teaching the third grade at Edison Elementary School, Mr. Brown teaches all subjects with a focus for preparing his students to be college and career ready. He is also the safety chair for the school and is currently working on the schools' Priority Leadership Team.

    "My expertise lies in classroom management. I practice PBIS and CHAMPs strategies in my classrooms and I create a positive classroom culture based on Kids at Hope and performance enhancement strategies that I've learned in the military," Mr. Brown said about his successes in teaching.

    Inspired every day to help students achieve their best, Mr. Brown aspires to become a principal in the near future. His vision is to lead a school where everyone is focused on helping all students reach their fullest potential. He envisions a school where teachers cannot wait to go to work and where students can't wait to get to school to learn because they have experienced success academically and socially.

    Mr. Brown is a current member of Omega Psi Phi, National Education Association, Tacoma Education Association, Washington Education Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and American Legion. Voted as one of the hardest working teachers when he was at Spencer Math and Science Academy in Chicago, Mr. Brown won an award for having the highest math test scores while teaching there. He was also nominated for the Golden Apple Award while at Manitou Park and was elected Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Citizen of the Year by the Tacoma Chapter of Mu Xi. Retiring from the Army Reserve after 31 years of service as a major, he received a Bronze Star while serving as an intelligence officer during Operation Desert Shield. He also received several Army Achievement Medals and Army Accommodation Medals while serving in the military.
