The selection recognizes James Shields's commitment to excellence in Education.
- Nashville, TN (1888PressRelease) May 20, 2015 - James Shields, Marketing Educator at La Verge High School, has been selected as an Honored Member of the Covington Who's Who Executive and Professional Registry.
Upon earning his associate's degree at Jefferson State Community College, James Shields sought out a job in the Birmingham Steeldogs (AF2) / Bulls Hockey (ECHL) office. Due to his outgoing and winning personality, they hired him as a marketing representative. Gaining experience and responsibility, he was promoted to coordinator taking responsibility for planning and managing marketing efforts of both teams. Relocating to Nashville to work toward his bachelor's degree, Mr. Shields found diagonal promotions by working as the beverage manager at The Palm, as a special event associate at Comdata, and as a marketing director for OTC foods.
For the last five years, Mr. Shields has been with Rutherford County Schools as a marketing educator at La Verge High School, as well as serving as the head coach for the girls' soccer team. Being a positive role model for students is always his number one goal, in addition to integrating real-life experiences into the classroom. While leading the Marketing Pathway, he has linked the capstone class with the Motlow College. As a Marketing Dual Credit Class, students achieve credit for BUS 2380. Mr. Shields is responsible for pioneering the Marketing Dual Credit in his district three years ago and it has now spread to three other schools.
"I hope to have this credit offered country-wide by next year," Mr. Shields said excitedly. "As a CTE teacher I prepare my students for both the workplace and college. Students who take my Marketing Pathway leave with their first college credit and a solid understanding of the business workplace. I can only open the door; the efforts of the individual students is what creates their success."
Mr. Shields is also the sponsor of the business and marketing club at La Vergne High School. Their DECA chapter has boomed in popularity and has successfully qualified students for the international conference over the past five years. He also led a group of La Verge students to compete in the Capitol Hill Challenge, a group that he advised in partnership with Senator Lamar Alexander who completed in a nationwide stock market competition. As the coach of the girls' soccer team, they have become the most successful women's team sport at the school. Mr. Shields is also a TN ACHIEVES mentor, where he has guided students through the process of gaining two free years of college, of which he has retained 100% of his assigned students.
Hoping to better his community with each day, Mr. Shields hopes to continue helping each new class achieve their highest potential so that they can enter the workforce after high school or continue in their education with confidence and success.
Holding a BS in Business Administration from Middle Tennessee State University, he is currently working on his MBE. Named Teacher of the Week by WKRN, some of his other achievements include being a Level 5 Teacher through the Tennessee Educator Acceleration Model-Level, being a lead teacher through My College Option, being a Capitol Hill Advisor through SIFMA, being honored as a Diplomat with Rutherford County Chamber, and being named Top Revenue Generator through AF2.
