  • Reading, PA (1888PressRelease) July 20, 2013 - Gregory M. Mentzer, Director of Special Education at Hamburg Area School District, has been selected as an Executive of the Year Member of the Covington Who's Who Executive and Professional Registry. The selection recognizes Gregory M. Mentzer's commitment to excellence in Education.

Gregory M. Mentzer, who earned a BS in Kinesiology with a minor in Health and Physical Education from Pennsylvania State University, followed by a Master's Degree in Education and Administration from the University of Scranton, is currently pursuing his doctorate in educational leadership with a minor in special education law at Nova Southeastern University.

Certified in numerous areas of education, including K-12 special education, health, and as a principal, as a special education supervisor, and in curriculum and instruction, Mr. Mentzer is also qualified to teach middle level mathematics, science, social studies, reading, and language arts. He began as a health and physical education teacher at a small coal region school in Schuylkill County, PA, where he also served as their athletic director and head athletic trainer.

During those years, Mr. Mentzer decided he wanted to do something more, something different.

"After noticing that many of the juniors and seniors in my health classes were unable to read an eighth grade level health book, and then listening to the way many of the other teachers spoke about these students in the faculty lounge, made me feel like no one wanted to give these students a chance to succeed," Mr. Mentzer admitted.

After leaving the classroom to pursue further education, Mr. Mentzer also spent three years working at a juvenile detention center, working closely with his supervisor to write the curriculum and also open the first all-girls residential facility in the area.

Now the director of special education for the entire Hamburg Area School District, Mr. Mentzer determines educational standards and goals for special education programs, ensures programs are comply with federal, state, and local laws, and sets policies and procedures for all special education teachers and their staff to follow.

Currently working to finish complete his EdD, Mr. Mentzer hopes to then pursue a law degree, continue working as director, but also practice special education law to defend school districts.

Also a member of National Education Association, Pennsylvania State Education Association Center for Exceptional Children, Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society, and Pi Lambda Theta Honor Society, Mr. Mentzer has served as guest speaker at East Stroudsburg University to students pursuing careers in health and physical education and has also spent time on the curriculum committee and athletic committee at North Schuylkill School Board. He currently volunteers with the Special Olympics, Ashland Little League Baseball, and as an official for the Tri-County Midget Football and Anthracite Midget Football.
