  • Pittsburgh, PA (1888PressRelease) March 20, 2014 - Gerald Goldstein, Research Career Scientist with the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System, has been selected as a Featured Member of the Covington Who's Who Executive and Professional Registry. The selection recognizes Gerald Goldstein's commitment to excellence in Healthcare and Neurological Disorders.

Gerald Goldstein, who holds a BA in Psychology from City College of New York and a PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Kansas, spent five years as a clinical psychologist providing psychological services to veterans of the Second World War, the Korean Conflict, and the Vietnam War. From there he became a research psychologist and eventually a research career scientist, devoting much of his time to psychological research.

"As a young student I was immediately exposed to several of the most eminent figures in psychology," Dr. Goldstein said. "I knew then that I wanted to be a psychologist."

While at the University in Lawrence, Kansas, and the Topeka, Veterans, hospital, Dr. Goldstein began his research career. Although the VA appoints only a small number of professional people to do research on a full-time basis without any obligation to do clinical work, he was able to continue doing some patient work for the remainder of his career. But his main responsibility was to remain productive as a scientist through support of his research and implementing and publishing various projects. His area of interest included structural brain disease, such as stroke, chronic alcoholism, and severe mental illness like schizophrenia.

It has always been Dr. Goldstein's goal to make a scientific contribution to the area of neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders. He was greatly influenced by several scientists, but especially Martin Scheerer, a very charismatic man who was not only a major scientist and scholar, but also a great teacher at the University of Kansas.

Dr. Goldstein is a member of the American Psychological Association and National Academy of Neuropsychology and has served as president of the International Neuropsychological Society, National Academy of Neuropsychology, and the Division of Clinical Neuropsychology of the American Psychological Association. He's the recipient of numerous awards, including the Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary's Award, the Federal Executive Board of Pittsburgh Silver Award, and the Nelson Butters Award for Research Contributions to Clinical Neuropsychology.

He also received numerous distinguished career awards from the National Academy of Neuropsychology and the International Neuropsychological Society. In 1970, he co-authored his first book, entitled 'Assessment of Brain Damage: A Neuropsychological Key Approach'. He has authored eight books. Dr. Goldstein is also currently engaged in extensive work in the area of neurodevelopment and hopes to continue contributing to its research literature. He hopes to complete a series of studies with his colleagues concerning schizophrenia.
