Courtney Raney Gives a Tribute to Famous Painters with a Nod to Comic Book Heroes at Artspace Warehouse in Los Angeles
Currently showing her Pop Culture inspired artworks at Artspace Warehouse, Courtney Raney branches out to create odes to some of her favorite Twentieth Century artists. She infuses her paintings with collages from relevant comic books thus adding a colorful and provocative twist.
- Los Angeles-Long Beach, CA (1888PressRelease) July 25, 2012 - In Ode to Fauvism inspired by Henri Matisse's 1909 La Danse, Raney incorporates bits of X-Men's Wolverine representing the beast or "fauve" right into two of the dancers and her signature splatter mark. Likewise Raney uses the "beastly" bright colors with a painterly quality as the Fauvists did at the beginning of the Twentieth Century in reaction to the calmer mottling and softer colors predominant in Impressionism.
In Ode to Wondrous Women, Raney gets back to her highly graphic style while translating it into Frida Kahlo's 1940 Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird. As she remarks, "Frida Kahlo is a personal hero of mine and a Wonder Woman in her own right". Through splashes of tropical greens Wonder Woman flies hummingbirds around the artist instead of the super heroine's usual invisible jet.
Raney's Ode to Faceless Men is a clever take on Rene Magritte's 1964 "alleged" self-portrait The Son of Man complete with the green apple that Raney has seemingly thrown in front of Magritte's face. A splash to the left and the suit coat are filled with comic book images of Batman and his ambiguous nemesis Two-Face who are struggling with each other as well as their own identities.
Lastly with Ode to Reflection in a tribute to Pablo Picasso's 1932 Girl Before a Mirror, Raney continues to play on our common struggle with identity and also vanity. Images from Batgirl Volume 1: The Darkest Reflection somewhat erotically permeate the girl and her reflection in different ways as the heroine battles the murderous villain "The Mirror".
