Cost Containment International announces no-cost benchmarking services for all its energy clients
As Chicago moves towards requiring energy benchmarking, Cost Containment International is offering the service at no-cost to its energy clients.
- (1888PressRelease) July 25, 2013 - Chicago, Illinois - Cost Containment International, a licensed energy and sustainability consulting firm, has announced that it will be offering energy benchmarking services at no-cost to all of its commercial energy clients. The free benchmarking services will be particularly significant in the Chicago market in light of a City proposal for improving energy efficiency.
Chicago Mayor, Rahm Emanuel has introduced an ordinance that would require the City's large municipal, commercial, and residential buildings to benchmark their energy use and authorize the City to publically disclose the energy efficiency of these buildings. According to the details of the ordinance, buildings over 50,000 sq. ft. will be required to receive an EPA Energy Star score, track and verify their energy consumption. The ordinance would apply to approximately 3,500 buildings in Chicago.
Benchmarking provides a baseline of information to be able to assess current energy use and establish future goals for improved energy efficiencies. By identifying problem areas, opportunities are revealed for cost savings. Recommendations are then made that could include demand response, lighting retrofits, automated energy management systems, and more.

According to the EPA, buildings that are benchmarked consistently, over time save an average of 7% in energy. Buildings that start out as poor energy performers save even more. Chicago hopes to turn the accumulated energy savings of its 3,500 largest buildings into more jobs and lower greenhouse gas emissions.
The proposed compliance dates are as follows:
June 2014 - Commercial & Municipal Buildings larger than 250,000 square feet.
June 2015 - Commercial & Municipal Buildings between 50,000 and 250,000 square feet and Residential Buildings larger 250,000 square feet.
June 2016 - Residential Buildings between 50,000 and 250,000 sq. ft.
Chicago is poised to join a list of cities that already have energy benchmarking disclosure laws including Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Minneapolis, Washington D.C., and Austin.
