She is an entrepreneur, a mother, an author, an educator and an advocate for healthy Indian cooking. In 2010, her series, Spice Goddess, was launched on the Cooking Channel and is currently the second-highest ranked show on the network, and was nominated in 2011 for a James Beard Award, a prominent food journalism award. Both of her cookbooks, Everyday Indian and Bal's Quick and Healthy Indian, that features simple and healthy Indian recipes from her childhood, are bestsellers. She also has a weekly column titled The Appetizer which runs in the National Post.

The Vancouver TV chef was raised in a small village in India and came to Canada at the age of 18 through an arranged marriage. After realizing that it was not the life she wanted, she began in pursuit of a new dream. She eventually studied at the University of British Columbia, with hopes of becoming a teacher - she holds a master's degree in education. However, her passion in cooking came about when she began catering dinners and giving cooking lessons to pay off student loans.
