- Rochester, NY (1888PressRelease) February 19, 2020 - Canadian artist Viktor Mitic, whose powerful installation Shot Up Car toured major North American cities last year in a controversial, artful take on the escalation in gun-related violence, returns to the forefront of the contemporary art world with another innovative, contemporary piece entitled Lyric Neutrino Star, recently acquired by ARTISANworks in Rochester, New York. As Mitic shifts his medium to sculpture, he continues in his commitment to using art as a means to influence audiences and provoke discussion. His use of upcycled materials in his sculpture also highlights this combination of aesthetics with purpose.
“The ending of one painting begins another,” says Viktor Mitic. “We as a people have an obligation to reuse and repurpose materials in our own lives to make a better world for future
generations.”
Although Mitic is best known for his controversial artistic approach, firing live ammunition at images he painted of celebrities or iconic personalities in his signature Art or War series, he now uses a more process-based ideation in his work. The sculptures are done in stages using a variety of materials, often welded together, then deconstructed and assembled after going through a computer imaging process whereby pieces were modified, re-assembled and re-welded, all using upcycled materials. Some simply started as old paint drippings in his studio or as pieces from previous works. The final results are a number of colourful abstract configurations - often contrasting geometric forms with graceful curves.
These include his most recent stainless-steel pieces: Lyric Star, Death Flower Turbine, Gold Totem, Pink Gold Minecraft Totem, Rock Ship, Fragment, Gold Top, Red, the towering Heartland (made of bronze) and Lyric Neutrino Star (made of aluminum, steel and paint).
His latest work, Lyric Neutrino Star can be viewed publicly starting at the end of February 2020 on display at ARTISANworks in Rochester, NY. Check http://artisanworks.net/ for hours of operation and schedules. His other sculptures can be seen at Oeno Gallery in Toronto, Ontario
and in Galerie d Art Contemporain in Montreal, Quebec.
