Consultation Over Revised Draft of Toy Safety Standard Begins in Trinidad and Tobago
Trinidad and Tobago begins a consultation over the revised draft to its toy safety standard. The consultation ends on August 31, 2020.
- (1888PressRelease) July 30, 2020 - Trinidad and Tobago has begun a consultation over the revised draft to their toy safety that, if/when accepted, will strengthen its requirements.
The Trinidad and Tobago Bureau of Standards (TTBS) announced the consultation in June 2020 and it will accept comments until August 31, 2020. The revised draft standard, currently designated as PCTTCS 3:20XX “Safety of Toys – Compulsory Requirements” will, if accepted, replace TTS/ISO 8124-3:2010.
It contains a number of important provisions and requirements. These include provisions relating to:
• Defining the scope of toys, toy components and toy materials
• One set of migration limits for eight heavy metal elements (antimony, arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, lead, mercury, and selenium) for each of three categories of toy, tested according to ISO 8124-3 or ASTM F963. The three categories, each with their own limits, are:
1. Modeling clay
2. Finger paints
3. Toy materials other than modeling clay and finger paints
NB. Migration of boron for three categories of toy material are based on BS EN 71-3:2019
• Seven phthalates must individually or in combination amount to less than 0.1%, when tested according to ISO 8124-6 ‘Certain phthalate esters in toys and children’s products’. The seven phthalates are:
1. Benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP)
2. Dibutyl phthalate (DBP)
3. Bis-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP)
4. Diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP)
5. Di-isodecyl phthalate (DIDP)
6. Di-isononyl phthalate (DINP)
7. Di-n-octyl phthalate (DNOP)
• Labeling
The proposed date of entry into force, according to World Trade Organization (WTO) document number 20-4732, is January 29, 2021.
