- Washington, DC-MD-VA-WV (1888PressRelease) June 11, 2011 - CommonWealth One Federal Credit Union received the 2011 Partners in Education Award from the Alexandria City Public Schools on May 18, 2011 at the Education Breakfast and Awards Ceremony at the Alexandria Hilton Mark Center. The award honors community partners who contributed their valuable time and resources to the Alexandria City Public Schools. The event's theme was "Raising Achievement for ALL: The Power of Change and Collaboration."
CommonWealth One was nominated by Francis C. Hammond Middle School 3 for the award this year. CommonWealth One promoted financial responsibility to Francis C. Hammond Middle School 3 students every month when credit union representatives visited the school during the school year. Students opened accounts during these visits and learned critical money management skills, including investing and saving essentials.
In addition to monthly credit union day visits to the school, CommonWealth One hosted a "Reality Store Activity" for eighth grade Francis C. Hammond Middle School students, which was a real world money management simulation activity. Students had to make financial decisions impacting their "Reality Store" lives. They had to balance a budget and understand how their lifestyle decisions directly affected their finances. In addition to the "Reality Store Activity", CommonWealth One sponsored an after school program with the City of Alexandria Dollar Wi$e Committee. During this program, students went through a series of four classes; Basic Banking Concepts, Budgeting, Checking Accounts and Paying Yourself First.
