In an encouraging episode of “The Confidence Connection: Building Trust in a Virtual World,” the two give a behind-the-scenes peek at the seriously hard work and steely confidence it requires to make others laugh. The two comediennes talk about their time at Flappers Comedy Club in Burbank, California, share experiences working in comedy and how the Coronavirus has changed their lives. The episode will be available on Wednesday, August 26, on Apple Podcasts and all major podcast platforms.
Whitley, also seen on “Two Broke Girls,” “That’s So Raven,” “Young & Hungry,” “My Wife & Kids” and starring in Ice Cube’s hit film “Next Friday,” currently co-hosts a podcast called “Two Funny Mamas” where she and Sherri Shepherd tackle serious issues, while still making listeners laugh. Her relatable “Corona Chronicles” is a hilarious online series featured on Whitley’s Facebook page which she describes as therapeutic for her.
Originally a schoolteacher from Compton, Whitley reveals how one of the most beloved early black comedic stars of television, Sampson & Son’s Redd Foxx, gave her a compliment that encouraged her to pursue her dreams to become a standup comedian. She opens up to Sena about her personal life, why she adopted a child and the fascinating circumstances that made it possible; while delving into the inspiration behind her fictional novel “The Delusion of Cinderella,” a life lesson to young women who mishandle heartache. The modern-day Renaissance Woman explains how to maintain confidence through life and career.
“Confidence has to come from within; it's a part of fear,” says Whitley. “But it’s just like anything else. You have to practice every day. And I mean little things. Let’s say: ‘I am afraid to speak in front of people.’ Then you start speaking in front of three people, stand up in front of your friends, then four people. You start that way.”
“Kym brought so much joy to the podcast and reminded all of us that it’s okay to feel frustrated during this time,” says Sena. “I think we’d both agree that it’s important to find things that can make you laugh and find positive outlets during quarantine.”
“The Confidence Connection: Building Trust in a Virtual World,” is a new interview podcast that spotlights the insight, mindset and resilience of some of the most successful names in the world, revealing how they overcame challenges and developed the necessary skills and mindset to “fail forward.” Sena’s latest guests include CNN Anchor and former Fox News Anchor, Alysin Camerota, American Author, Keynote Speaker and Drummer for P!nk and other superstar performers, Mark Shulman, lawyer, entrepreneur and author, Isaac Lidksy, 2x Superbowl Champion, Jarvis Green and President of CBS Television Studios, David Stapf.
