  • Newark, NJ (1888PressRelease) November 20, 2014 - College Benefits Research Group (CBRG) was a featured guest for a webinar recently hosted by the New Jersey Institute of Continuing Education (NJICLE). CBRG co-founders David Slater and Steven Sirot along with partner, Janet Loren, CBRG's Certified Financial Planner, (CEP), shared their expertise with panelists Phyllis Klein, Esq. from Klein and Weisberg, LLC and Hon. David Issenman, JSC (ret.) from Skoloff & Wolfe, P.C. The panel was moderated by Tanya Helfand, Esq., Founder, Helfand and Associates and a certified matrimonial attorney.

College applications and the school selection process can be challenging for most families-there's a wealth of paper work to complete, visits to be made and costs to be considered. The exercise can be especially challenging in divorced families, whose members may not always see eye to eye and who may not communicate directly with each other.

The webinar focused on how divorced parents and their attorneys can plan to help their children through the college application and selection process. The panel discussed procedures for applications, college costs and how divorced families can successfully navigate this process.

Co-founded by Steven Sirot and David N. Slater and joined by their partner, Educational Counselor, Janet Loren, CBRG demonstrates how a private and/or public education is affordable and attainable and allows hard working families to hit a "home run" in finding the right school, academically, socially and financially, for their child. CBRG also assists with the filing of financial aid forms.

"We are different from other college planning services in that we offer 'harmonization' of financial, educational and social guidance for the entire family," says Steven Sirot. "We meet jointly with students and parents to develop a college game plan that works for everyone. Too often college students attend a school because their friends are there, or it is the so-called 'hot school' that is on everyone's radar, without any consideration of whether the school is right for them or the long-term effect it will have on family finances. We work hard with the entire family to let students know that going to college is a responsible decision that affects the whole family, and there are no 'free rides.' The student will be responsible for their academic success in college, which includes graduating in four years and paying back some loans."

College Benefits Research Group's community workshops are held throughout the state and explain in detail many strategies one can employ to find the best college "fit" for your child. Steven Sirot and David N. Slater, MBA, are Charter Members of the National College Advocacy Group (NCAG). Janet Loren holds professional memberships in the Independent Educational Consultants Association (IECA); the National Association for College Admissions Counseling (NACAC); the New Jersey Association for College Admissions Counseling (NJACAC); the Higher Education Counselors Association (HECA) and the National College Advocacy Group (NCAG).
