CODE 8: Revolutionizing Film-making With Audience Insights
On September 8th 2018, YouTube launched a live stream for a film called CODE 8. It'll be a monthly updated live sharing new progress about the film on every 8th of the month.
- Los Angeles-Long Beach, CA (1888PressRelease) September 20, 2018 - During this live, the director and screenwriter shared some back stage stories with their fans and answered some of their questions on Twitter. They also mentioned that some scenes of the film was actually revised, re-shoot and did some additional shooting after they gathered their supporters opinions on what they'd like to see and why. That means it would be a film that was actually made by audiences.
On March 22nd 2016, Robbie and Stephen Amell premiered a 10-minute short film as a teaser for a full-length feature. While releasing the short, the Amells simultaneously started an Indiegogo campaign in order to fund the full-length feature. With their target being $200,000, the film was funded less than 48 hours and continues to grow. After their campaign ended, they've raised over $1,500,000 in a month and over 1000% funded. It's also the highest-crowd-funded film of 2016 on any platform.
The film takes place in a world where 4% of the population are born with some types of supernatural abilities. Instead of being billionaire superheroes, most 'specials' live in poverty and resort to crime, forcing the police to become more militarized.
The story follows Robbie Amell's character who is struggling to pay for his ailing mother's health treatment and gets lured into a lucrative criminal world by Stephen Amell's character, who works for a drug lord.
Their goal was to prove that audiences still like a gritty and grounded film with super heroes. As with any dream project, Jeff Chan, Robbie Amell, and Chris Paré wanted to make a film that they had always wanted to see. Both the Amells expressed that by going with the crowd-funding route, they can keep the creative control to themselves, a role setting that has never been seen before.
A film created by the audiences, against to common sense in this field, has caused great discussion in many countries. With many fans expressing their expectations on SNS, Robbie recently stated in a Q&A that they've already finished filming on CODE 8 and are currently working on VFX. Some major media are also tracking this project and hoping to release more news anytime soon.
