Climbing high to raise funds for charity
"On 1st Jun 2011, Tom Taylor, Barbara Manktelow and Richard Llewellyn are climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa to raise money for Association of Young People with M.E and Macmillan Cancer Support with Private Kilimanjaro."

"I decided that I wanted to do something big for AYME, and you don't get much bigger than this! AYME is an important charity to me. My younger sister, Jessica was diagnosed with severe M.E over 4 ½ years ago. She has been rendered bedbound since and suffered greatly with this illness, she is very brave and has done her best to overcome every hurdle thrown at her (and there have been a lot!) AYME were there for her and my family and provided us with plenty of advice. They also work very hard to raise awareness of ME/CFS of which very little is known, and many medical professionals still dismiss it's existence."
Barbara, who is an Emergency Medical Technician at Medway Ambulance Station in Kent, added "Climbing Kilimanjaro seemed like a good idea in the pub but it's now becoming a frightening reality and at 38 years old I hope I can keep up with the youngsters on the mountain and make it to the summit!"
Barbara decided to climb Kilimanjaro to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support, a cause which is close to her heart as last year she lost two good friends to cancer, and is doing this climb in their memory.
Climbing Kilimanjaro is a very personal challenge for Richard. Having been very active outdoors, he recently injured his knee in a boarding accident and has not been able to do much since. "Having a disposition that wants to see everything the world has to offer, recovering from this injury has been quite frustrating. If there's a river, I want to row on it. A mountain, I want to climb it. A road, I want to drive it. Setting a challenging goal such as climbing Kili has really motivated me to get active again. This is going to be a fantastic experience that means we will be able to raise awareness and funds for such a debilitating and un-spoken illness such as ME."
