  • Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill, NC (1888PressRelease) September 11, 2013 - The Triangle Brick Headquarters in Durham, NC, designed by Clark Nexsen (formerly Pearce Brinkley Cease + Lee), has been named a gold award winner in the 2013 Brick in Architecture Competition sponsored by the Brick Industry Association (BIA). The facility was honored in a new Commercial Corporate / Office Building (Under $10 Million) category added in 2013. This is the fifth Brick Industry Association (BIA) award the firm has received.

Sponsored by the Brick Industry Association, The Brick in Architecture Awards program is one of the largest and most prestigious showcases of work in clay face and paving brick from architects across the country. For more information, visit http://www.gobrick.com.

Serving as the North American base of operations for the German parent company, Röben Tonbaustoffe, the project was designed to showcase brick masonry in a range of applications and was influenced by the architectural legacy of the German facilities. Completed in 2011, Triangle Brick's corporate office, design center, and brick garden was designed and constructed as a testament to the beauty and architectural appeal of brick. In addition to a variety of brick pavers, wood and metal elements were also carefully incorporated into the design of the exterior, creating a striking modern facility for the client.

"The site and buildings are organized along a masonry wall extending through the lobby and out on to the site. This articulated brick element serves as the defining characteristic of the project." said Jeffrey Lee, who was joined on the project's design team by Clark Nexsen's Irvin Pearce, AIA; and Rob Harkey, AIA. "We were delighted for ourselves and our client in receiving this award. It serves as validation of our hard work and our client's optimistic vision," said Lee.

The Triangle Brick Headquarters design also earned a 2012 North Carolina AIA Honor Award and a 2012 ASLA North Carolina Certificate of Recognition of the facility's brick garden.

Projects for the Brick in Architecture Awards were submitted by architectural and design firms around the country, and judged by a jury of their peers, including: Allison Anderson, Unabridged Architecture; Phil Casey, CBT Architects; Jack Esterson, WASA/Studio A; Preston Gumberich, Robert A.M. Stern Architects LLP; Jeff Knopp, Behnke Associates; Marvin Malecha, College of Design, NC State University; Dave Otte, Holst Architecture; Eric Penney, Nagle Hartray Architecture; Bruce Schenk, Mark B. Thompson Associates; Vanessa Schutte, DLR Group; Donald Selander, Pedcor Design Group, and Bruce Wood, Kallmann McKinnell & Wood Architects.
