Clariant Chemicals (India) In Ink Show 2010 - Sustainable Pigment Solutions
The Pigments Business of Clariant Chemicals (India) is participating in the Ink Show 2010 in Mumbai to showcase its Sustainable Pigment Solutions; between Sept 30 - Oct 3,2010.
- (1888PressRelease) September 26, 2010 - India's leading specialty chemicals producer - Clariant Chemicals (India) Ltd and Eckart are jointly showcasing their array of sophisticated products under the Theme "Color in Focus - Sustainable Pigment Solutions" at the Asia Coat + Ink Show 2010, between Sept 30 to Oct 3, 2010, in Mumbai, India. Clariant's broad range of novel solutions and pacesetting ideas for traditional and non-impact printing as well as for innovative metal decorative inks will be on display at the exhibition to be held at NSE-Goregaon.
At a parallel International Seminar on Inks and Coatings, to be organized by The All India Printing Inks Manufacturers Association (AIPIMA), Dr. Martin Poppe, Head of Global Technical Marketing, Printing Business, Clariant Produkte (Deutschland) GmbH will present a paper on "Safe Food Packaging" and Mr. Torsten Schmelich of Eckart will present a paper on "Excellence on Effect Pigments and Metallic Pigment Inks" on September 29, 2010. Mr. Martin P.J. John, Head of BU Printing, Clariant International, Switzerland has been invited to be the Guest of Honour at this seminar.
The core focus segments that will be showcased include:
(A) Metal Decorative Inks: The cans we see in the supermarkets are printed using metal decorative inks. The substrates used are tin or chrome plated steel sheet or aluminium. Metal decorative inks and coatings are used for external printing, and internal and external coating on the can. The inks are based on alkyd or polyester resin.
The pigments used in metal decorative printing are expected to possess a number of properties, such as heat resistance and stability, resistance towards silver lacquer, sterilization (boiling or retort fastness), sweat and saliva (toys, food & beverage packaging), as well as light fastness, excellent flow properties and stability towards the filled goods. They should, of course, also comply with regulatory requirements (e.g. heavy metals). At the show, Clariant will showcase the pigments range especially recommended for this application, with products from well established ranges such as Permanent®; Novoperm®, PV Fast® and Hostaperm®.
(B) Safe Pigments for Food Packaging: Food packaging has become more important due to changes in consumer behavior. People opt for pre-packed and pre-cooked food due to "easy to open" packaging, convenience (ready-to-eat), shelf-stability (no need for refrigeration), longer shelf life (vs. normal canned food), etc. This requires the final printed package to undergo a severe boiling or retorting process. Current advancement of processed food technology and development of new packaging materials also promotes the growth of retortable packaging.
The pigments used for food packaging should therefore offer good storage stability and compatibility with PU system, good rheology (low viscosity); high strength and gloss, ease of dispersion, no detrimental effect on the bond or lamination strength, retort or boiling fastness, while they are expected to comply with specific regulatory requirements (e.g. heavy metals)
Clariant has extensively studied the retort fastness of its pigments. Our recommended products include pigments from the Permanent®, Novoperm®, Hostaperm® and PV Fast® ranges.
(C) Chlorine Free Pigments: Due to environmental issues, chlorine free packaging is required. This leads to the ink manufacturers and print houses to use chlorine free inks for the packaging; hence the need for chlorine free pigments to be used in the finished inks. Clariant offers a selection of chlorine free pigments from its established ranges such as Hansa®, Novoperm®, Hostaperm® and Permanent®.
(D) Silk Screen Inks: These inks are popular as the screen printing process is suitable for various substrates and different shapes. The process allows printing of posters, bottles, plastics, films, traffic signs, electrical circuits, textiles, etc.
The process requires pigments with specific properties such as good light fastness and weather fastness, desired flow property and compliance with certain regulatory requirements (e.g. heavy metals). Clariant has a wide color selection that can be especially recommended in its pigment range; in particular from its Hansa®, Permanent®, Novoperm® and Hostaperm®.
(E) Non Impact Printing: Clariant provides a complete color solution for inkjet inks. These are trendsetter pigments and dyes for inkjet inks for SOHO and Wide Format. The pigments and charge control agents are suitable for electro-photographic toners. These are patented products with focus on environmental care.
(F) UV Curing Inks: UV curing inks have become one of the fastest growing segments in the graphic industry. The major benefits offered by UV technology are faster run speeds resulting in improved productivity, quick start-up resulting in less waste, quick turnaround and conversion due to instant curing of the ink film, environmentally safe technology without the use of VOCs and better print quality (i.e. gloss).
We have thoroughly tested our pigments with and without stabilizers in order to be able to offer solutions with the most suitable performance.
