City Year is an education-focused nonprofit organization that partners with public schools to help keep students in school and on track to graduate. City Year AmeriCorps members commit to a year of full-time service in schools. City Year corps members choose to serve where the need is greatest and help keep student on track to high school graduation.
This year, 188 corps members at City Year Chicago are making a difference in 20 of Chicago's highest-need schools. Research shows that students at risk of dropping out can be identified as early as sixth grade by three early warning indicators: poor attendance, disruptive behavior, and course failure in math and English. City Year's Whole School Whole Child model is based on that research, and corps members work with students identified as at-risk. City Year Chicago corps members provide academic support, attendance and positive behavior encouragement, and community and school improvements. They serve as tutors, mentors, and role models to nearly 4,200 students.
