CIHL and RBC Strengthen Youth Hockey Connection
With its core commitment of developing Hong Kong's next generation of ice hockey players, elite Hong Kong-based hockey league CIHL and official 2012-2013 season league sponsor the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) are strengthening their commitment to developing youth hockey in Hong Kong with an expanded program.
- (1888PressRelease) October 05, 2012 - HONG KONG - This includes the RBC CIHL Intern Program and partnerships with Canadian junior hockey team, the Coquitlam Express, and Hong Kong's U18 league.
Making its debut this year, the RBC CIHL Intern Program welcomes high-level Canadian hockey players, who will be part of the CIHL, coach youth hockey and gain valuable working experience with an internship at a Hong Kong company. Courtesy of RBC, each intern will receive a stipend to help welcome them to Hong Kong and help them settle into their homes for the 2012-2013 CIHL season.
In addition to raising the bar on the CIHL through the RBC CIHL Intern Program, the league will be working with the Express, part of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL), to share training and coaching methods with the four teams of the U18 league, comprised of Hong Kong's most talented players under the age of 18. The U18 league is the CIHL's development league, and each team is partnered with a CIHL team. The CIHL is made up of the Quam Hong Kong Tycoons, the AsiaXPAT Kowloon Warriors, the Macau Aces and the South China Sharks. U18 players are regularly called up to join the CIHL to play on Saturday nights, gaining valuable experience in the fast-paced, full contact league.
CIHL co-founders Gary Lawrence, Rick Siemens and Gregory Smyth are part of a group that is the majority shareholder in the Coquitlam Express.
Commented Smyth: "We're delighted to be working with RBC on this year's intern program and thank them for their support and contribution. This year, we are looking to grow the sport and the CIHL at all levels. At the top, we have the RBC CIHL Intern Program, and from a development side we have our new partnership with the U18 league and the Coquitlam Express."
An exchange and internship program is also open to players of the BCHL and U18 league. Selected U18 players will be invited to join the Express to further develop their hockey skills, while graduating BCHL players are invited to apply to the RBC CIHL Intern Program.
"The Royal Bank of Canada is delighted to be a part of the RBC CIHL Intern Program and to provide assistance to talented Canadian hockey players, who are looking to not only develop the sport in Hong Kong but also to apply the values of hockey to the real world, working environment in Hong Kong," said Andrew Turczyniak, Head of Asia, RBC Wealth Management.
The RBC CIHL Intern Program seeks to give young, talented hockey players an opportunity to gain valuable working experience in Hong Kong through an internship, while continuing to play hockey in Hong Kong. More details on the intern program are available at http://www.cihl.com/intern-program.php.
