Children's Grief Awareness Day
This press release is for an event that will be held on Thursday November 17th, 2011. The event will be hosted by Project KARMA, Inc. The event will be an observance of National Children's Grief Awareness Day.
- (1888PressRelease) October 22, 2011 - Atlanta, GA. - November 17, 2011 is going to be an exciting day for us! We invite you to come out and stand with the thousands of school children and teens that are living with loss in the metro Atlanta area. Research shows that an estimated one in nine Americans will lose a parent before age 20. (This translates to approximately 40,000 in the metro area alone.) Yet, the death of a parent remains one of our society's most poorly understood issues.
Our grief support work in the community points to parents and communities struggling with how to support these young people and families beyond immediate bereavement. We believe these struggles powerfully articulate just how devastating the early death of a loved one can be - on parent and child alike. As pervasive as these losses are in our midst, little has been reported or discussed on the subject of childhood bereavement. We believe this national awareness day represents a unique opportunity to focus on this poorly understood issue. We believe this national awareness day represents a unique opportunity to focus on this poorly understood issue.
At Project KARMA, Inc. we interact with grieving families - kids and parents alike - every day. We hear their stories and help these young people connect with their memories and the changes that come with their losses in a way that supports their healing and their ability to create their "new normal". All of our programming hinges on the wider public giving these young people and families a voice, and
supporting their journey with time and presence. Your support of this event and this mission is central to how we move in the community. Please take this opportunity to stand with kids who often have to walk this path alone. Show them that their community's concern did not end with the funeral.
Project KARMA Inc. invites the community Thursday, November 17, 2011 to join us as we create a safe, and creative space to remember and stand with these young people in a show of support and healing at Ralph G. Bunche Middle School, 1925 Niskey Lake Road, Atlanta, GA 30331. The event and program is from 4-6 pm. Our agenda includes a mini-parent workshop on holiday grief support, a dance through grief demonstration, a teen poetry troupe presentation, special invited guests, and a community art project, and lantern release. We are so excited about bringing this event to the community.
JOIN US on November 17th !!!!! The public is invited to wear blue to honor their own loved ones and to show that the community cares about how our young people are facing loss. Your support shines a light on how they are learning to live with hope and the support of their community no matter where they are. www.projectkarmanow.org
