  • Montgomery, AL (1888PressRelease) May 20, 2024 - Children’s Aid Society of Alabama's APAC Program Launches Statewide Recruitment Drive to Find Forever Families for Waiting Children

As the nation observes Foster Care Awareness Month this May, Children’s Aid Society of Alabama's Alabama Pre/Post Adoption Connections Program (APAC) is launching a statewide recruitment drive to find caring individuals and families to become adoptive parents for Alabama’s waiting children in foster care.

Recent data from the Children’s Bureau for FY 2022, released on March 20, reveals a concerning trend in adoptions from foster care. The numbers of children adopted from foster care have reached their lowest levels since 2015. Nationally, the number of children adopted from foster care in FY 2022 was 53,700, down 500 from the previous year and 12,500 (18.9%) from its recent peak in 2019.

During our 18th Annual Permanency Conference in April, Alabama DHR shared that there are currently 150 children in our state eagerly waiting to meet individuals and families who will become their forever family. The APAC program offers FREE supportive services for every step of the lifelong adoption journey. Many potential adoptive parents are surprised to learn that adopting with the assistance of APAC's skilled adoption navigators results in adoption at little to no out-of-pocket expenses.

"We are on a mission to help create forever families for our 150 waiting children," says Suzie Diamond, Program Director at Children’s Aid Society of Alabama. "May is Foster Care Awareness Month, and sadly, many older children will exit care without having a loving, supportive family to call their own. APAC is committed to changing that."

Adopting a child is a serious commitment, and APAC understands that potential adoptive parents have many questions and concerns. That's why APAC is gearing up to begin its free adoption preparation courses in Birmingham, Montgomery, Mobile, and Huntsville in the month of June, date TBD. The program is seeking at least eight individuals or couples per class.

If you've ever considered adoption or are interested in learning more about becoming an adoptive parent, now is the time to take the first step. Contact APAC today to find out how you can make a difference in the life of a child and become part of their forever family.
