- (1888PressRelease) September 11, 2014 - The zombie-themed junior scrimmage, dubbed "The Skating Dead", will be held at the Skate Station Funworks located at 230 Blanding Blvd., Orange Park, Florida, at 6:00pm on Sunday, October 12th. Rink doors will open at 5:30pm for the scrimmage. Admission for the event is $5 at the door. Active duty military and children ages 10 and under are admitted free. Roller derby fans should remember to bring their own chairs for the event.
"The Skating Dead" is the final game of the 2014 season for the Orange Park-based Cherry Bomb Charmers. "We've had a terrific season, and we're ecstatic to have formed the relationships that we have with other area teams," said Charmers' General Manager, Dana Wolfe, "Our 'Skating Dead' invitational is a perfect closer for our season - it affords the Charmers a fantastic opportunity to mix with and strengthen their friendships with the skaters that they will be competing against in the upcoming 2015 season. Mixed scrimmages like this are a great way of nurturing that derby sisterhood on a regional level."
Two of the teams participating in the October scrimmage, the Savannah Jr. Derbytaunts and the Ocala Carnivores, are already on the calendar to bout the Cherry Bomb Charmers in 2015. "These teams aren't just great competitors," Wolfe said, "They're also friends - derby sisters to our Charmers - and we are thrilled to have them skating with us for 'The Skating Dead'."
The Halloween-themed scrimmage will feature a strong "zombie" motif. "We're encouraging all the skaters, the spectators - everyone - to dress as zombies for the event," said Wolfe, "The Charmers are excited to have this chance to wear 'zombie' bout-makeup. 'The Skating Dead' is going to be a lot of fun for everyone."
The goal of the Cherry Bomb Charmers junior roller derby team is to encourage young skaters to realize their full potential and to empower them to become courageous young women, radiating confidence on and off the track.
