Cheap loans provide support for the European banking sector
The introduction by the European Central Bank of a cheap source of long-term funding for European banks proved to be a key factor in calming markets at the beginning of this year.
- (1888PressRelease) March 02, 2012 - Previously, investors had been worried about the possibility of another credit crunch, and even a banking collapse.
These fears receded as banks borrowed a total of EUR 489 billion through the new loan facility in December, easing concerns that they would struggle to finance their operations. Yesterday, a second round of lending saw banks borrow a further EUR 530 billion.
