With the lights still out at Chatroulette similar sites have experienced rapid growth. Was shutting down Chatroulette for over 24 hours a huge strategic mistake for owner Andrey Ternovskiy?
Los Angeles-Long Beach, CA (1888PressRelease) August 24, 2010 - The buzz online is growing on why Chatroulette suddenly shut down and continues to be offline over 24 hours later. Users frustrated with this mysterious outage have started looking for alternatives creating rapid growth for similar sites that have opened since the Chatroulette phenomenon started.
MeetRandom.com ranks different Chatroulette type sites based on traffic and popularity. According to Meetrandom.com traffic has on the average more than doubled for alternative websites to Chatroulette. Several sites such as ladywheel.com and nastyspace.com saw traffic more than tripled within hours of Chatroulette going offline.
Allen Fox from Meetrandom.com explains "Keeping a site offline for so long may turn into a traffic nightmare as users get used to different platforms and become less inclined to return to a site that didn't work. Once the site comes back online the decline in traffic could snowball since it is a peer to peer system."
Either way this does not seem to be a very well thought out plan on the part of Andrey causing an uproar with his fan base and posting promises he could not keep by not releasing the new version as promised before midnight.
We all hope that Chatroulette will see a brighter day and be back better than ever. For now we will all just have to wait and see.
