Charles H Hennekens MD Named Adjunct Professor at Meharry Medical College
FAU Sir Richard Doll Research Professor Named Adjunct Professor at Meharry Medical College.
- (1888PressRelease) April 30, 2013 - Charles H. Hennekens, M.D., DrPH, the first Sir Richard Doll Research Professor as well as first recipient of an endowed chair in the new Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University, has been appointed as Adjunct Professor and Family and Community Medicine at Meharry Medical College. This appointment formalizes the long standing collaborations between Hennekens at Florida Atlantic University and Professor Robert S. Levine, MD, and his colleagues at Meharry Medical College to reduce racial disparities in health. Both institutions recognize that these collaborations are vital as well as consistent with their missions.
While Hennekens has noted that "Death is inevitable but premature death is not", he and Levine have documented the persistence of racial disparities in health and mortality during the last 50 years in the United States that have resulted in about 4.4 million premature deaths among African-Americans.
Hennekens and Levine and colleagues at Meharry believe that reducing disparities in access to healthcare as well as its utilization are necessary but will not be sufficient. They advocate further research, teaching, and training in preventive medicine with a particular focus on minority health.
The collaborations of Hennekens and Levine and their colleagues at Meharry have resulted in 46 peer reviewed publications. According to Science Watch, Hennekens was the third most widely cited medical researcher in the world from 1995-2005, and five of the top 20 were his former trainees and/or fellows. Hennekens has been ranked #81 in the history of the world by Science Heroes for saving over 1 million lives.
