- (1888PressRelease) November 06, 2012 - Barrie, Ontario - Shred North, the local paper shredding company in Barrie, Ontario recently held a charity shred day at Gilda's Club Simcoe Muskoka in order to raise funds for the cancer support community as well as raise awareness about the growing issue of identity theft.
Two mobile paper shredding trucks were on site at Gilda's Club on October 13th shredding paper for all the residents that brought out their confidential documents. On top of shredding documents, residents were served up some great food by The Butcher Shop who featured a charity BBQ onsite during the event. The charity shred day raised a very impressive $2,450 for Gilda's Club.
"It was such a great day", states Daryl Woytowicz, General Manager of Shred North. "Anytime you can raise awareness of important issues in our community, you are doing the right thing. In addition, we were able to donate 100% of the funds collected to a great place like Gilda's".
"Gilda's Club Simcoe Muskoka relies entirely on donations from individuals and local businesses to provide free social and emotional support to anyone touched by cancer," says Deborah Loosemore, Managing Director of Gilda's Club Simcoe Muskoka. "Support from businesses like Shred North means we can continue to welcome people to our innovative Program of support and networking groups, educational workshops, lectures, and social activities. All of our Programs are based on research and led by mental health professionals, and are an essential complement to medical care."
In addition to raising funds and awareness for Gilda's Club, Shred North was aiming to bring to light the need to shred paper in order to combat the growing threat of identity theft in our community. According to a survey conducted by the Canadian Privacy Commissioner's office in 2010, 1 in 6 Canadians have already been victims of identity theft. To further assist residents the shred day also featured a community booth run by the Ontario Provincial Police to help educate members of the community in regard to the importance of identity theft prevention.
"The OPP are always happy to educate residents regarding the perils of Identity Theft", states George Silvestri, OPP Community Services Officer. "To be able to help an organization like Gilda's Club makes it all the more worthwhile".
