Changes to Food Contact Stainless Steel Legislation Proposed in Italy
A look at recent proposals to update Italian legislation governing food contact stainless steel.
- (1888PressRelease) September 07, 2021 - Italy has signalled its intention to adopt a draft piece of legislation that will, if accepted, amend Decree of the Minister of Health of March 21, 1973, in relation to food contact stainless steels.
The latest proposal to change the decree – ‘Hygiene rules for packaging, containers and utensils intended to come into contact with foodstuffs or personal use products, limited to stainless steels’ – includes provisions that would:
• Add one more type of stainless steel to the positive list – UNI EN 10088-1:2014 Numerical designation 1.4062, also known as AISI/ASTM A240 or UNS 32202
• Add one specification for the concentration of certain elements in food contact stainless steels without codes or designations – Type n: short-term repeated use for kitchen and table cutting items at room or hot temperatures
Italy announced its intention in Notification 2021/0513/I from the European Commission (EC), published in July 2021. According to this, the three-month standstill period for the EC and Member States will end on October 29, 2021.
