-Repertoire-
Bach: The Art of Fugue, BWV 1080
Arranged for string quartet and wind quintet by Samuel Baron
-Sponsor-
Co-sponsored by Fifth Third Bank
-Unique Features of this Concert-
-This concert marks the debut appearance of Windscape, a quintet formed in 1994 by five eminent woodwind soloists, on the Chamber Music Society of Detroit series.
-This concert marks the premiere performance of Bach's complete The Art of Fugue on the Chamber Music Society of Detroit series. The performance is notable in several ways:
-The manuscript of Bach's The Art of Fugue does not specify a particular instrumentation, and over the years the work has been performed by a variety of instrumental combinations. The unique arrangement being performed at this concert for string quartet and wind quintet was made in the early 1960's by Samuel Baron (1925-1997), founding flutist of the New York Woodwind Quintet and artistic director of the Bach Aria Group.
-Like many of Bach's later masterworks, The Art of Fugue stands as an exploration in depth of fugal techniques and structure; Bach's genius is seen in the extraordinary wealth of invention he applies as he takes a single theme and uses it as the thematic and architectural basis for a concert-length work.
-Because of its scope and because Bach worked on the piece during the last months of his life, it is often regarded as a summing-up of his life's work.
