Celebrating the Successes of Greenwood
Local authors honor the history of southern town in new book!
- Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson, SC (1888PressRelease) December 10, 2014 - For almost 160 years, Greenwood, South Carolina has grown from a small, underdeveloped village to a city that thrives on industries of railroads and textiles. To tell the story of this great progression, local authors Stacey Thompson and Bethany Wade of the Museum and Railroad Historical Center complied more than 200 vintage images to produce Greenwood, the newest addition to Arcadia Publishing's Images of America series.
Incorporated in December of 1857, Greenwood was a small rural settlement with big city dreams. Bringing in business and job opportunities, railroad companies and textile mills were the start of the town's rapid growth and development. With the city booming with educational advancement, entrepreneurial spirit and a strong sense of community, it's no wonder why Greenwood once boasted having "the widest Main Street in the world."
With the majority of images being provided by the archives of the Museum and Railroad Historical Center, Images of America: Greenwood is the second pictorial history written by the museum and the fourth overall book that the museum has contributed to producing. Containing stories and images of the town's origin, growth and successes, the authors hope that this title will "increase people's understanding of this community and their sense of pride in how far we've come." A portion of the profits from the sale of this book will help support exhibits and educational programs at the museum.
