- (1888PressRelease) May 26, 2022 - Thursday, May 26 is the 125th publishing anniversary of “Dracula.” It was published in May 26 1897 by Archibald Constable & Company in a first print run of 3,000 copies, but received rather mixed reviews - despite the support and acclaim of Stoker's friend, Sherlock Holmes creator Arthur Conan Doyle. But the novel has since been translated into 44 languages and sold millions of copies around the world.
Sales really began to take off after the scandal generated by the appearance of F.W. Murnau's 1922 feature Nosferatu, starring Max Schreck.
The German movie was a success that propelled the vampire myth to the forefront of popular culture. Stoker widow Florence sues the Germans as thy did not have copyright to adapt the novel for the movie. This scandal generated a huge popularity for Dracula novel. The justice forced the German to destroy each and every copy of the movie produced without copyrights. Apparently one copy escaped and it can now be seen free on the internet.
Dracula mania kicked into even higher gear with Universal’s blockbuster 1931 film, directed by Tod Browning and starring the Transylvanian actor Bela Lugosi. Dozens of vampire-themed movies, television shows and literature followed, though Lugosi, with his exotic accent, remains the quintessential Count Dracula. Dracula is now said to be the most filmed character in history. “Dracula” the novel has since been translated into 44 languages and sold millions of copies around the world.
The novel is taking place both in Transylvania and England.
125 years after publishing the novel Bram Stoker has a statue erected in Transylvania in front of the Dracula Hotel from Borgo Pass as a thank you note from the people from Transylvania that are benefiting from tourism generated by his novel.
