- Newark, NJ (1888PressRelease) January 14, 2012 - Theater Sararattir, or "An Entire Night," announces the opening of "Paakhir Moton Shokaal" (a bird like morning) at the Edison Valley Playhouse in New Jersey on January 21 and 22, 2012.
The play chronicles the life of an immigrant from West Bengal, often called the cultural state of India, and a region with many first generation immigrants in the United States. In pursuit of the ephemeral, gilded American dream, "A husband and a wife", the protagonist, is torn between the allure of western culture, their cultural roots, assimilation, and cultural solidarity. "Paakhir Moton Shokaal" (a bird like morning) both captures and reflects upon the immigrant's experience in negotiating past with present and present with past.
Indranil Mukherjee, lead actor and writer said, "Our intent is to connect with the common man here. There are certain inhibitions that, as an immigrant, we inherit consciously or sub-consciously. Our theater tries to use that as a source of reflection to make our audience conscious without preaching. We intend to make this play in English in the near future as the depiction is culture agnostic and can be correlated with a first generation immigrant."
Actor Soumendu Bhattacharya said, "This play captures a Bengali family as an example but is universal. Our audience will connect to the life some of us may lead; the challenges we face and the how-tos involved with those challenges."
In the tradition of Mira Nair's The Namesake or Zadie Smith's White Teeth, this play focuses on the immigrant experience in the U.S. It opens January 21st and will show through January 22nd. For Tickets and Show timings see: http://www.sararattir.info . Please note the play will be showcased in Bengali language only.
