The Peninsula Bangkok Hotel celebrates this forthcoming Mid-Autumn Festival with its ever-popular handmade Peninsula mooncakes from 10 August to 30 September 2012.
- (1888PressRelease) August 07, 2012 - The Peninsula Bangkok Hotel (http://www.peninsula.com/Bangkok/en/default.aspx) will celebrate the forthcoming Mid-Autumn Festival with its ever-popular handmade Peninsula mooncakes, available from 10 August to 30 September 2012, together with special Mid-Autumn set menus at the award-winning Mei Jiang restaurant from 27 to 30 September 2012.
Traditional Chinese mooncakes are eaten during the Mid-Autumn Festival that occurs on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month - falling in September or early October in the Gregorian calendar. The date parallels the autumnal equinox of the solar calendar, when the moon is at its fullest and roundest. The full moon is traditionally a symbol for reunion (tuan yuan) and the Mid-Autumn Festival is a time for family reunions and "gathering around the hearth" (yuan means round). Families gather to admire the moon, eat mooncakes and partake in the other cultural traditions. Enjoying the moon is an ancient tradition in China going back nearly 1,400 years. Celebrating the moon during mid-autumn appears to have occurred since Zhou Dynasty times. Today, mooncakes are still considered an indispensable delicacy and are offered by friends and colleagues and at family gatherings while celebrating the festival.
This year The Peninsula Bangkok's Executive Chinese Chef Jackie Ho and his team will make
200,000 mooncakes by hand in 52 days (the equivalent of 3,846 mooncakes per day), using approximately 10 tonnes of ingredients including duck eggs, which give the very best quality and flavour along with the Peninsula's own secret recipe for soft pastry skin. Contained in newly- designed packaging, only a limited quantity are freshly made every day by our veteran chefs. The delicious treats are available in two flavours - Lotus Seed Paste and the bestseller, Egg Custard, which is created from a traditional secret recipe made famous by the The Peninsula Hong Kong. No preservatives are used in the making of the Peninsula mooncakes.
