CEEW's Arunabha Ghosh selected Young Global Leader by World Economic Forum 12 March 2013
The World Economic Forum today announced the nomination of Dr Arunabha Ghosh as a Young Global Leader (YGL).
- (1888PressRelease) March 13, 2013 - New Delhi, - Dr Ghosh, CEO of the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW), an independent policy research institution in India, is among ten Indians chosen by a committee chaired by H.M. Queen Rania Al Abdullah of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.
According to the World Economic Forum, YGLs are drawn from a pool of several thousand candidates and selected based on a proven track record, leadership experience, ability to overcome adversity and commitment to society. Ghosh was deemed by the committee to have committed his energy and knowledge to finding solutions to the most critical issues facing humankind. Ghosh, 34, had previously held worked at Princeton, Oxford, the World Trade Organization (Geneva) and was a policy specialist at UNDP's Human Development Report Office in New York where he co-authored three Human Development Reports. With work experience in thirty countries, he conceptualised and returned to India to establish the Council on Energy, Environment and Water as an independent institution that would address pressing global challenges through an integrated approach.
Learning about his selection as a YGL, Dr Ghosh said, "Becoming a member of the YGL community is an honour and I thank the WEF for considering me worthy. It is an endorsement of the exciting and innovative research, policy engagement and stakeholder partnerships for which CEEW has gained reputation within and outside India." Ghosh advises governments, industry and civil society around the world on: energy and resources security; renewable energy policy; energy-trade-climate linkages; climate governance (financing, R&D); water governance and institutions; and international regime design.
Under Ghosh's leadership, CEEW's has had impact at the global, national, and state levels. CEEW worked with the Planning Commission of India and created the National Water Resources Framework Study. It conducted the first independent assessment of India's National Solar Mission. It published the first report on India and global governance, with particular emphasis on energy and resources. It facilitated the $125 million India-US Joint Clean Energy R&D Center, and created the Maharashtra-Guangdong Partnership on Sustainability. It is now working to develop a countrywide network of hundreds of renewable energy service providers to help them scale activities to serve India's 400 million people without access to electricity.
These and other initiatives from CEEW led the National Security Adviser, Ambassador Shivshankar Menon, to note in his address at CEEW's anniversary last August, "[I]n two years you have carved out a very distinct niche for yourself by taking an integrated approach to issues, which are becoming more and more important to all of us. It is quite remarkable what you have done in such a short span of time."
The 2013 YGL honourees will become part of the broader Forum of Young Global Leaders community. "The Forum of Young Global Leaders provides a unique effort to engage the younger generation into the management of global affairs, working together and being integrated into the larger Forum community. The YGLs have an exceptional opportunity to improve the state of the world," Klaus Schwab, Founder and Executive Chairman, World Economic Forum said. The YGLs convene at an annual summit, which will be held this year in Yangon, Myanmar, on 2-5 June.
"I consider the YGL nomination as encouragement to continue pursuing the difficult path and to try and leave this world in a better condition than how we found it," Dr Ghosh said.

The Council on Energy, Environment and Water is an independent, not-for-profit policy research institution. CEEW addresses pressing global challenges through an integrated and internationally focused approach. CEEW's work profile covers all levels of governance: at the global/regional level, these include climate finance, energy-trade-climate linkages, technology horizons (governance of emerging technologies), and bilateral collaborations with China, Israel, Pakistan, and the United States; at the national level, it covers energy and resource efficiency and security, water resources management, and renewable energy policies; and at the state/local level, CEEW develops integrated energy, environment and water plans, and facilitates industry action to reduce emissions or increase R&D investments in clean technologies.
