CEA takes Counter Terror Expo by storm with CBRN-E solutions

(1888PressRelease) March 28, 2013 - CEA will exhibit its CBRN-E (i.e. chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive) solutions for the security sector at the trade show in London (UK).

Laurent Olmedo, CEA's Global Security Research Programme Manager, explains why the organisation will attend the trade show: "We have scientific expertise in the management of risks and threats that are of great benefit to authorities. We respond to global needs by providing innovative technologies that have come about through scientific breakthroughs."

Mr Olmedo continues, "The completion of a significant number of R&D projects has led to numerous technology transfers, either by providing technology licence agreements to companies, or by founding start-ups. In addition, we have capabilities in technology integration and operational testing."

For the first time, CEA, which stands for the Commissariat à l'énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives (the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission), will exhibit at Counter Terror Expo (Stand FP5) - the trade show of reference in the UK for the security sector, to be held from 24 to 25 April of this year at the Olympia exhibition centre, in Central London.

CEA is a leading R&D body in the energy, defence, security and high-tech sectors that has developed a range of technologies that are relevant to the trade show. These technologies include detectors of pathogenic substances, of nuclear material, and of radiological, chemical and explosive substances, as well as technology used in the surveillance of illegal trafficking in such substances.

CEA will exhibit its innovative CBRN-E (i.e. chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive) solutions for the security sector at Counter Terror Expo. All of CEA's new technologies are either ready to be applied to industry or are already being used.

More particularly, CEA will display three innovative solutions in CBRN-E prevention at the trade show. The first technological solution is Gampix, a new generation of portable camera that uses MediPix and TimePix technology to superimpose images that are visible to the naked eye onto gamma images in order to pinpoint the presence of radiological material.

The final product is unlike previous solutions in this field thanks to the fact that it is a handheld device that weighs less than 2kg. The camera is also easy to manipulate and features a user-friendly interface. This gamma imager has been developed by Canberra, a French leader in nuclear instrumentation, and will be available at the end of 2013.

Secondly, CEA will showcase the KDTB GoldTM solution, which is a biological immunoassay (or biochemical test) for detecting pathogens. The test, which has been licensed to NBC-SYS, a French CBRN specialist, is intended for first-aid organisations and fire services, and is already in use in several countries.

Finally, CEA will display T-REXTM, an innovative detector of explosive vapour traces. This detector constitutes a major breakthrough, as conventional instruments are mostly dedicated to the detection of explosive particles.
