CaseyGerry Named Liaison Counsel in BOA Unemployment Benefits Litigation
Partner Gayle M. Blatt to Help Oversee Complex Class Action Lawsuits.
- San Diego, CA (1888PressRelease) August 11, 2021 - A California federal judge has appointed San Diego plaintiffs’ law firm CaseyGerry as interim liaison counsel for the Bank of America (BOA) Multi-District Litigation (MDL) in re: Bank of America California Unemployment Benefits Litigation, case 3:21-md-02992-LAB-MSB now pending in the United States District Court for the Southern District of California.
CaseyGerry was appointed by United States District Court Judge Larry Burns to act as interim liaison counsel for the class plaintiffs – serving as intermediary between the law firms involved in the BOA class action and the court. The MDL litigation consists of multiple California class action lawsuits – consolidated in June – and accuses BOA of exposing unemployed Californians to fraud while cutting off access to critical benefits during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The bank holds the exclusive contract to administer unemployment insurance and other benefits issued by the Employment Development Department. According to the lawsuit, consumers who reported unexplained charges had their accounts frozen by the banking giant, preventing them from using the funds to purchase key essentials such as food and shelter. The suit also alleges BOA acted negligently and failed to protect California unemployment insurance benefits recipients from fraud – causing the neediest of Californians to suffer significant financial losses.
Gayle M. Blatt, a CaseyGerry partner and chair of its complex litigation team, will oversee the duties assigned to CaseyGerry as interim co-lead counsel. Blatt has held numerous national leadership positions in multi-district litigation and class action lawsuits.
