But for at least one day that competition was put to the side recently for a celebration of women in sports. Last month, North's Kacey Dory and Katrina Borofski along with South's Becca Laudermilk and Serena Colbert headed to Faneuil Hall in Boston for the annual Massachusetts celebration of Girls and Women in Sports Day. The event recognizes female athletes and celebrates the achievements of girls and women in sport. We spoke to a source at Cascade, a Plymouth-based sales and marketing company, who said "It's important for female athletes to be recognised and rewarded. There's such a wealth of talent in Plymouth and to see them celebrated internationally is great."

The keynote speech at the event was delivered by Kristine Lilly, who has represented the US in international women's soccer competition more than any other individual, and is one of the most decorated female athletes in US history. You'd have to look long and hard to find another athlete with the career accolades that equals Lilly's. When she retired from the sport in January, 2011, Lilly had been at the top of her sport in four different decades. She played in five World Cups and was a part of three different Olympic teams. A 23-year veteran of the U.S. Women's National Soccer team, she was a two-time world champion and is the proud owner of two Olympic Gold Medals.

"Kristine Lilly is an inspirational individual," said our source at Cascade, "She broke a world record for caps held by a female, and then just went right on ahead to break the men's record as well. You couldn't ask for a better speaker at an event like this."

"They are stars who shine in many skies," Dr. Carmen Mariano, President of Archbishop Williams High School, said. "They are outstanding athletes and effective leaders. They are excellent students. They are stellar citizens of our school. Just when I don't think they can make me prouder, they do."
