Carmel Public Library Foundation Announces "Authors with Authors" A New Fundraising Event at Carmel Sunset Center, May 3, 2012
Save the Date! Thursday, May 3, 2012 at 7 pm at Sunset Center Theater, this intimate event features three accomplished authors.
- Salinas, CA (1888PressRelease) March 02, 2012 - "Authors with Authors", a new fundraising event hosted by the Carmel Public Library Foundation, will be held at the Carmel Sunset Center Theater on Thursday, May 3, 2012 at 7 pm. Set in the beautiful Sunset Center Theater, this intimate event features three accomplished authors. Jane Hamilton, Anne LeClaire, and Gail Tsukiyama will engage in casual conversation about their published works, works in progress, their lives as writers, and the value of supporting community libraries. The three authors have a lively artistic and personal camaraderie that engages the audience. Lovers of literature will have an opportunity to meet with these writers' writers at a wine reception preceding their presentation and at the book signing afterwards. The Carmel Sunset Center is located on San Carlos St and 9th Ave in Carmel.
"Authors are fierce and benevolent protectors of libraries, especially in these challenging times," said Cheryl Carter, chair of the event. "These three women have generously agreed to give their time and talents in support of the Carmel Public Library."
Jane Hamilton lives, works, and writes in an orchard farmhouse in Wisconsin. Her short stories have appeared in Harper's magazine. She is the author of six novels. Her first novel, The Book of Ruth, won the PEN/Ernest Hemingway Foundation Award for best first novel and was
a selection of the Oprah Book Club. "Ms. Hamilton gives Ruth a humble dignity and allows her hope…but it's not a heavenly hope. It's a common one, caked with mud and held with gritted teeth. And it's probably the only kind that's worth reading about," The New York Times Book Review, praise for The Book of Ruth. Her second novel, A Map of the World, was an international bestseller and an Oprah Book Club selection.
Anne LeClaire is the author of eight novels including, Entering Normal and The
Lavender Hour, and the award-winning memoir, Listening Below the Noise. He
r work has been published in twenty-four countries. She is a former reporter, radio news broadcaster and newspaper columnist whose work has appeared in publications such as Redbook and the New York Times. "LeClaire illuminates the treasures that can be found in the practice of silence. Elegant and honest, this is one of those rare books that finds its way into our hearts and stays there, working its magic again and again," Ann Hood, author of The Knitting Circle, praise for Listening Below the Noise.
Gail Tsukiyama was born in San Francisco, California to a Chinese mother from Hong Kong and a Japanese father from Hawaii. She is been the recipient of the Academy of American Poets Award and the PEN/Oakland Josephine Miles Award. A resident of the San Francisco Bay Area, she has taught at San Francisco State University, University of California, Berkeley, and Mills College. "Tsukiyama has long been known for her emotional and detailed stories. This time, she has gone even deeper to explore what happens to ordinary people during frightening and tragic times," Lisa See, author of Snow Flower and the Secret Fan and Peony in Love, praise for The Street of a Thousand Blossoms.
Carmel Public Library (Harrison Memorial Library) has been a treasured resource on the Central Coast of California for 107 years. Some 106,000 library cardholders and visitors walk through the library doors annually. Among these are families, children, teens, and adults of all ages who depend on the library to advance their practical life skills as well as to provide resources and services that advance literacy, foster cultural awareness, promote healthy living and wellness, and provide arts and cultural education and entertainment.
The Carmel Public Library Foundation provides funds for 100% of the library's books, materials, programs, equipment and services. While the City of Carmel funds the library salaries and building maintenance, it is private contributions to the Library Foundation that fund the rest.
Proceeds from the evening benefit the Carmel Public Library Foundation whose mission is to fund the Carmel Public Library, to keep the doors open and to maintain the library's preeminence as a steward and cherished cultural institution on the Central Coast of California.
