- (1888PressRelease) October 29, 2011 - The Caring for Carcinoid Foundation (CFCF) is pleased to announce its celebratory programming in honor of the 2nd Annual Worldwide NET Cancer Awareness Day. Worldwide NET Cancer Awareness Day was established to promote awareness and understanding of carcinoid and related neuroendocrine cancers. This year's CFCF-sponsored events include a Patient Education Seminar at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and the awarding of Sunflower Grants to support groups across the United States for awareness-building and patient support activities.
Worldwide NET Cancer Awareness Day Patient Education Event
Taking place on November 11, 2011 in Houston, TX, CFCF's Patient Education Seminar will feature expert clinicians discussing the latest developments in diagnosis, surgery, peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT), and more. Confirmed expert speakers include Drs. James Yao, Thomas Aloia, Jason Fleming, and Alexandria Phan from MD Anderson Cancer Center, as well as Dr. Ebrahim Delpassand from Excel Diagnostics and Nuclear Oncology Center.
As a means of empowering patients and caregivers, CFCF's conference will also feature a patient panel. In their own words, panelists will describe their experiences with treatments such as PRRT, offer support and inspiration, as well as practical tips for living with neuroendocrine cancers.
While the event is geared towards patients and their caregivers, it is open to the public. Local physicians and policy makers interested in learning more about neuroendocrine cancers are also encouraged to attend. The event is free of charge thanks to the generous support of our sponsors. Sunflower Grants
The Caring for Carcinoid Foundation awarded its first Sunflower Grants in 2008 to support patient-centered programs promoting neuroendocrine cancer awareness, advocacy, and education. To qualify for a 2011 grant, programs had to be designed and delivered in conjunction with the 2nd Annual Worldwide NET Cancer Awareness Day on November 10, 2011. All carcinoid, pancreatic neuroendocrine, and related neuroendocrine cancer patient support groups were encouraged to apply.
The Caring for Carcinoid Foundation is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2011 Worldwide NET Awareness Day Sunflower Grants to:
* Delaware Valley Carcinoid/NETs Connection (DVCC)
* NorCal CarciNET Support Group (NCCN)
* Sea South (San Diego Carcinoid/NET Group)
Each group was awarded a grant to support patients and raise awareness of neuroendocrine cancers. Sunflower Grant-funded programming includes the creation of educational brochures, informational displays, local celebration events, website design, and software for video-conferences.
"The Caring for Carcinoid Foundation has put us on the map! Our heartfelt thanks for their support for both our first patient conference and granting the funds for posters and brochures to display at our Worldwide NET Cancer Awareness Day exhibit. Receiving a Sunflower Grant is quite a recognition," says Suzi Garber, President of Delaware Valley Carcinoid/NETs Connection.
The Caring for Carcinoid Foundation plans to continue its Sunflower Grants program in 2012 in order to support the valuable activities that neuroendocrine support groups pursue. Click here for more information, or to apply for a 2012 grant.
About Neuroendocrine Cancer
Neuroendocrine tumors are a type of cancer that can originate almost anywhere in the body. The most common sites from which neuroendocrine tumors arise are the lungs, appendix, small intestine, rectum, and pancreas. Neuroendocrine tumors that arise in the pancreas are called "pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors," "islet cell tumors," or "pancreatic endocrine tumors." When neuroendocrine tumors originate in other areas, they are most commonly classified as "carcinoid cancer." Currently, there are ~105,000 people living in the United States with neuroendocrine cancers.
