Career Step Physician Advisor Joins the ICD10monitor's Editorial Board
Career Step Physician Advisor Stephen Spain, MD, CPC, will be joining the ICD10monitor editorial board and contributing an article each month.

As a member of the ICD10monitor editorial board, Dr. Spain will contribute an article each month for publication on ICD10monitor.com. His articles will focus on helping medical professionals improve their understanding and application of documentation and coding principles in preparation for the ICD-10 transition.

Dr. Spain is a family physician with over 30 years of practice experience. He earned his Certified Professional Coder (CPC) credential in 2007 and is the immediate past president of the Tyler Chapter of the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC), recently served as a member of the National Advisory Board of the AAPC, and teaches advanced medical coding at Tyler Junior College. This experience and education give Dr. Spain a rare perspective on the ICD-10 transition and make him particularly qualified to advise clinicians on how they can avoid disruptions to their work processes, patient care and cash flow during and after the ICD-10 implementation.
As the Career Step physician advisor, Dr. Spain provided guidance on the content and approach of Career Step's ICD-10 Physician Education and Training. On Dr. Spain's recommendation, Career Step's program includes an overview of the purpose and value of ICD-10 as well as specialty-specific diagnosis and procedure training-all of which was designed to encourage learning and retention as quickly as possible in consideration of the many demands on providers' time.
