- (1888PressRelease) May 29, 2021 - Tim Pagliara, founder and CIO of CapWealth located in Franklin, became the lead underwriter in a Tanzanian hospital supporting women’s health.
St. Joseph Hospital is managed by the Sisters of Our Lady of Kilimanjaro in the Catholic Diocese of Moshi. The local population consists of 60 mixed tribes who mainly work in business, livestock, and small-scale agriculture. Recently, they’ve seen a significant increase in prenatal care and a need for expanding the Reproductive and Child Health Department (RCH). Many of the mothers who enter the hospital are adolescents and impoverished.
“My work with Mwenge Catholic University has taken me to Moshi, Tanzania, 11 times in 20 years. Each trip I’ve climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro and Sr. Dr. Urban Lyimo, president of St. Joseph Hospital, had always tended to my injuries when I returned from my journey,” Pagliara said. “We lost her in May of 2020 and are dedicating the expansion in her honor.”
Currently, The hospital’s RCH unit has 36 beds and attends to 37-48 patients daily. Only 51% of patients during pregnancy are able to attend their four doctor appointments due to lack of transportation. The travel is too difficult or far on foot. These factors lead to malnutrition births, labor complications, and a higher mortality rate for both mother and child. To reduce these concerns, the hospital tries to keep the mother at the hospital just prior to birth. However, they lack rooms, and patients end up sleeping double to a bed or in hospital corridors. The expansion will allow more patients to stay comfortably and safely.
The hospital also provides health education to prevent multiple unwanted pregnancies. They address family planning, nutrition, and hygiene. The facility also includes quality antenatal and postnatal care.
The expansion of the RCH department will provide clinical space to attend to more patients. A larger clinical department will detect those with risk preventing perinatal morbidities and mortality rates.
