Cancer Tops Causes of Death for American Hispanics
The founder and lead surgeon of the Las Colinas Cancer Center talks prevention, detection.
- (1888PressRelease) January 27, 2016 - While heart disease is the No. 1 killer of Americans on the whole, cancer tops it in the country's Hispanic population. In fact, cancer technically overtook all other causes of death in the Hispanic population in 2009 and the figures have been holding strong ever since. The most commonly diagnosed forms of the disease in this population include breast, prostate, colorectal, lung and thyroid cancer.
"It is estimated the number of new cancer cases diagnosed in America's Hispanic population would top 125,000 in 2015 alone," says Dr. Gregory Echt, founder and lead surgeon at the Las Colinas Cancer Center. "With many of the most common forms of cancer diagnosed within the Hispanic population those that have strong early screening protocols, these numbers can change if people and their healthcare providers take action."
Dr. Echt recommends everyone - not just those of Hispanic descent - take steps to lower cancer risks they have an ability to change. Eating right, exercising, avoiding misuse of alcohol and steering clear of tobacco can all make a very big difference.
"A healthy lifestyle isn't a guarantee that cancer won't strike, but it can lower the odds tremendously," Dr. Echt says.
In addition to adopting healthy lifestyle habits, it's recommended that everyone speak with their healthcare providers about personal cancer risks. Finding out when routine screenings should begin, for example, can lead to early detection and lifesaving treatment. Prostate cancer, breast cancer and even lung cancer have screening protocols that can give patients and their doctors the ability to fight back successfully.
"Being proactive about prevention and detection won't eliminate chances for cancer development, but the two can play a huge role in lowering the number of deaths associated with cancer," Dr. Echt says.
