Canadian Custom Clearance Experts ARGO Customs Inform Shippers About New Requirements When Shipping to Australia
- (1888PressRelease) June 26, 2019 - Toronto, ON – Canadians seeking to export goods to Australia between September 1, 2019, and May 31, 2020, may be subject to new Australian importation regulations. The Australian Department of Agriculture and Water Resources (DAWR) are currently combating the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (BMSB), an extremely dangerous pest known to travel in a wide variety of shipped materials.
Any shipments between Canada and Australia containing “target high-risk goods” will be subject to mandatory treatment for BMSB. This encompasses a wide range of goods, including (but not limited to) explosives, wood products, most types of metals, cutlery, and electrical machinery. In addition, goods identified as “target risk goods,” may be subject to random inspections. These “target risk goods” include salts, fertilizers, plastics, printed books, and numerous other goods.
For those shipping “target high-risk goods,” the treatment must be conducted in Canada by a treatment center which has been approved by the Australian DAWR. If the goods are not treated or are treated by an unapproved provider, may be subject to onshore treatment, or else refused entry entirely. Approved methods of treating BMSB include heat treatments, methyl bromide fumigation, or sulfuryl fluoride fumigation.
ARGO Customs strongly encourages all Canadian export operations to inform themselves on these new regulations, before they come into effect on September 1, 2019. The list of affected goods is long and covers many of the most-exported items a shipper is likely to carry. Additionally, partnering with a Canadian customs clearance company can help avoid any delays or other problems.
