- (1888PressRelease) February 04, 2011 - Vancouver, WA - Business training for female survivors of Rwandan genocide; women's reproductive health workshops and cervical cancer screenings in Peru; and vegetable gardens in the Dominican Republic: These are just three of the projects funded for 2011 by Café Femenino Foundation (CFF), a Vancouver, WA based non-profit.
This is the seventh year that Café Femenino Foundation (CFF) has funded global grant requests that improve the nutrition, health, education and living conditions of women coffee growers and their families. Requests are generated in-country by women coffee-producers who operate small farms in the poorest and least accessible regions of Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Haiti, Kenya, Mexico, Nicaragua, Peru, and Rwanda.
"Our in-country network and established connection with coffee cooperatives gives CFF the unique ability to connect local women with the resources and funding they desperately need to improve their living conditions. It is gratifying to see the impact these funds have made on the health and well-being of recipient communities during our annual return trips," states Marilyn Dryke, president of the CFF board of directors.
Additional projects funded this year include: coffee harvesting baskets to reduce back strain for women coffee farmers in Bolivia; pig breeding co-ops in Rwanda; a quinoa cultivation project to reduce childhood malnutrition in Peru; and locally managed micro-loans for female-operated businesses in Guatemala.
CFF raises funds through charitable donations, the Coffee Can Project which collects change at coffee shops and businesses throughout the U.S. and Canada, and other fundraising events. "Money stretches much further in underdeveloped countries," states Gaylene Smith, CFF founder. "Even small donations accomplish miracles." To learn more about CFF, visit: www.coffeecan.org.
