  • Nassau-Suffolk, NY (1888PressRelease) November 17, 2012 - The Adelphi University Exhibitions Program is pleased to present Cabin Paintings, an exhibition of recent work by Maria Katzman. The show will feature images rendered in both oil and gouache of the woodlands surrounding her cabin, propelled through seasonal flux. The exhibition will be on view from November 28, 2012 through January 8, 2013, with an opening reception to be held on Sunday, December 9, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.

Season and place are important to Maria Katzman's work. She has returned to the historic Byrdcliffe Artists colony in upstate New York for several years and during this time her process has evolved from working from photographs to painting directly from and within the landscape, plein air style.

"Painting from life is intrinsically more about the experience of being in the world and looking at nature, comments Katzman."It is, subjectively, a radically different act than working from photographs, which is more about distilling an image from a frozen moment in time. When I am painting outdoors I am present and engaged in the process of time unfolding. They are action paintings of a sort, documenting the inherent fluidity of visual experience"

Her imagery moves from the lush light of midsummer, to the glow of fiery fall landscapes, to the more stark and subdued palette of winter in the Catskills. Her Cabin Paintings often derive from simplified geometric shapes that shift constantly across the permeable borders between abstraction and naturalism. The effect is a painterly brevity born of disciplined immediacy.

Maria Katzman, born and raised in Chicago, IL, received her BFA from The Kansas City Art Institute in 1984, and her MFA from Yale University in 1988. She was awarded a fellowship to the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture between her undergraduate and graduate school years. Several years after moving to New York City, Katzman established a studio in upstate New York where she has most recently exhibited at the Fletcher Gallery, The Windham Fine Arts Gallery, and the Catskill Mountain Foundation. She has shown her work at Artists Space, New York University, and The Bowery Gallery in New York, as wall as other galleries throughout the country.
